Monday, Oct 4: Smart Wonders School, Sector 71, Mohali celebrated Gandhi Jayanti today with a special assembly. The assembly began with the school prayer and then the school choir led the students in singing Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite bhajan- ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’.
The students were enlightened about the Mahatma’s message. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”. He also said once that ‘there are many causes I am prepared to die for, but none which I am ready to kill for’.
A brief overview of the Mahatma’s life and times and the contribution he made to India’s freedom struggle was given. The children were also informed of the various tenets by which Mahatma Gandhi lived. His message of non-violence, truthfulness, amity amongst all, tolerance, respect for differences of culture and tradition and love for humanity were extolled. The thought for the day was Mahatma’s injunction to all Indians, ‘Be the change you want to see’.
The students and parents also celebrated the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s message by taking part in a humanitarian contribution and collection drive organized by NGO ‘GOONJ’. As a part of the effort, the parents and students contributed old clothes, books and toys in the school collection center. The enthusiastic participation by all concerned ensured that a substantial cache of these essential materials were contributed by the school to the NGO for redistribution amongst the needy children.
