Jammu, 01 June : Ten SIKH christened ‘DASHMESH’ after Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, celebrated its 43rd Raising Day on 01 June 2008.
Raised on 01 June 1966 the Battalion has seen action in all operations thereafter. Be it counter insurgency operations, line of control or battles fought, these men have not flinched from their duties but have shown exemplary courage and bravery in the most difficult hours, in the true spirit of a brave soldier. A battle honour and a host of gallantry and Distinguished Service medals earned by the unit in a span of just four decades stands as a testimony of its professionalism and valour. The unit met its first acid test in the 1971 war and it came out victorious with flying colours and lived up to its name.
The Battalion under the command of Col KC Kalley, VSM,captured the feature of Purbut Ali in Sind Sect and went 65 kms deep inside the enemy territory. In an apt recognition of their gallantry Vir Charka was awarded to Maj Amrik Singh, Capt NK Parmar, Sub Gurcharan Singh, SM (Posthumously), Hav Gurjant Singh (Posthumously), Sep Mohan Singh. Sena Medal was awarded to Maj AS Gill and Sep Nachhattar Singh (Posthumously), Vishisht Sewa Medal was received by Col KC Kalley, VSM. Maj BS Johal, Sub Dhian Singh, KC, Sub Naurang Singh, Hav Malkiat Singh and Sep Balbir Singh were Mentioned-in-Dispatches.
In between the Operations, the Battalion continued to show sparks of brilliance in the fields of sports and professional competitions during its peace tenures. Subedar Kaur Singh of 10 SIKH made the nation proud by winning a gold medal in Boxing in 1982 Asian Games. He was awarded Padma Shree on 31 March 1983 and Arjuna Award on 02 April 1984. Besides him there are a number of national sportsmen and quite a few in making.
Presently 10 SIKH is deployed somewhere in Jammu and Kashmir in intense Counter Insurgency Operations. Presently the team of officers and men of 10 SIKH are lead by Col Ajai Sharma, a seasoned soldier, who on the 43rd Raising Day redeemed their pledge and said that the trust shown by the nation and the Regiment on our capabilities are a constant motivating factor for the troops and they are ready to take on any challenge.
