GORAKHPUR, MAY 29 :Panjab University rowers displayed outstanding performance as they claimed 13 medals in the Khelo India Universities Rowing Championships at Ramgarh Taal here. Panjab University dominated in the 2000 km category.
In a stunning performance the Panjab University Chandigarh rowing team under the guidance of rowing coach Deepak Kumar Singh won a medals of 6 gold 3 silver and 4 bronze medals, When asked about the quality of the competition Deepak Kumar said condition in the water at Ramgarh Water Channel were just perfect and the way this venue is developed it certainly holds the potential of organising regattas of international class.
Chandigarh Rowing Association secretary and former National level rower advocate Rajiv Sharma expressed his happiness and satisfaction about the overall arrangement made by the UP Government while organising these events, In the men lightweight singles scull 2000 bronze medal went to Simaranjit Singh while in a lightweight double scull the gold medal went to Dinesh and Ravinder in the Cox’s pair gold medal went to Sukhdeep Singh and Aditya Singh while bronze medal was bagged in the lightweight men Cox’s 4 by Arjun Kumar Sudarshan Gurpreet and Ajit . In the women category of lightweight double scull gold medal was won by Gurbani Kaur and Poonam while another gold was bagged in women doubles scull by Khushpreet Kaur and Diljot Kaur.
In the men doubles scull Lokesh and Vijay won bronze medal while in men singles scull Perduman Singh won silver. In women coxless 4 Anjani Kumari, Devika, Neha ,Isha won bronze medal while in quadruple scull poonam, Gurbani Khushpreet and Diljit won the gold medal. In the men Coxless Four Aditya Singh, Sukhdeep Singh, Sahil Mudgal and Rajat won the gold medal while in men quadruple skull Vijay, Dinesh, Lokesh and Ravinder won silver medal. Sprawling four lane 2 km long rowing course and two kilometre long rowing course has been specially set up for KIUG which was earlier inaugurated by MP and Bhojpuri film star Ravi Kishan fro Gorakhpur . Rowing was introduced in the kiug for the first time and coordinated by the officials of rowing Federation of India Deputy Director Punjab University Dr Rakesh Malik was also present during the medal ceremony.
