Surrey, England, May 23, 2008: SSP Chowrasia’s opening round of two under 70 ensured he got off to a solid start at the BMW PGA Championship being played at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England.
PGTI member Chowrasia was tied 12th after the first round as he trailed the leader, Ireland’s Paul McGinley by five strokes. Among the other Indians in the field, Shiv Kapur (71) finished the day in tied 26th, Jyoti Randhawa (73) was tied 59th and Jeev Milkha Singh (78) was tied 129th.
SSP Chowrasia had an ordinary start to his opening round on Thursday after he dropped bogeys on the third and seventh. However, he fought back with birdies on the eighth and ninth, an eagle on the 12th and another birdie on the 15th. He dropped a stroke with a bogey on the 17th before closing his round at two under par.
Shiv Kapur’s opening round 71 saw him make two birdies, three bogeys and an eagle. On the front nine, Kapur was looking good after he sank birdies on the second and fourth. But he soon lost the initiative with bogeys on the fifth and seventh. On the back nine, Kapur had only one blemish, a bogey on the 10th. Thereafter he made seven pars and an eagle on the 12th.
It was an up and down first round for Jyoti Randhawa. He sank birdies on the first, fourth, 12th and 17th and dropped bogeys on the third, sixth, eighth, 10th and 13th.
Jeev Milkha Singh had a forgettable round at the Wentworth Club on Thursday. He made two birdies and eight bogeys in his round of 78.
