New Delhi:Five enterprises, including two in the small-scale sector have been selected for the fourteenth Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Awards, for the year 2007.The awards will be given away by Minister of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Sharad Pawar, on 10th April.
The Rajiv Gandhi National Awards have been established to give special recognition to manufacturing and service sector organizations considered to be leaders of quality movement in India. Given annually by the Bureau of Indian Standards, these awards were instituted in 1991 and have been designed in line with similar awards in developed countries, such as the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in USA, the Deming Prize in Japan and the European Quality Award.
The five National Awards include one award each for large-scale and small-scale companies in the manufacturing and service sectors, and one ‘best of all’ award. The awards for 2007 are:

These awards are aimed at encouraging the quality movement in India by-
– encouraging Indian industry to make significant improvements in quality for maximizing consumer satisfaction and for successfully facing competition in the global market as well;
– recognizing the achievements of those organizations which have improved the quality of their products and services and thereby set an example for others;
– establishing guidelines and criteria that can be used by industry in evaluating their own quality improvement efforts; and
– providing specific guidance to other organizations that wish to learn how to achieve excellence in quality, by making available detailed information on the `Quality Management Approach’ adopted by award winning organizations to change their culture and achieve eminence.
