Breast Cancer Awareness Day

The October month is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer through education, early detection, and advanced treatment options. Keeping in mind this year’s theme on breast cancer awareness “No one should face breast cancer alone” the National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER, Chandigarh in collaboration with Nivedita Charitable Trust conducted an awareness program to spread a message of hope, resilience, and early detection of breast cancer on 11th Oct. Dr Sushmita Ghoshal, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr SM Bose, Former Head, Department of General Surgery, PGIMER, Chandigarh and Dr Divya Dahiya, professor, deptt of general surgery, PGIMER, Chandigarh graced the occasion.

Around 200 students and faculty from NINE participated in the program. All the experts discussed the risk factors of breast cancer, the importance of early detection, monthly self-screening, various treatment modalities, and prevention and management of various complications after surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. They stressed upon the counseling and preparation of not only the patients after the diagnosis of the disease but also their significant family members to have strong support for the patients throughout the journey of the treatment. Dr Sukhpal Kaur, Principal, NINE emphasized the importance of consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; reducing the consumption of junk foods, and regular exercising in the prevention of cancer. Students of NINE also performed a role play highlighting the importance of early detection and management of breast cancer. The program was organized by faculty of including Ms Meenakshi nursing, Dr Maninder, Dr Manisha, Dr Manju Dandapani and Ms Shabana.
