9 Feb : An interactive talk was organized on “Higher education opportunities in the United States with special reference to legal education” at Department of Laws, Panjab University, Ms. Diane Brandt, ACAO, US Embassy, New Delhi gave presentation of legal education scenario in US as it emerged after the global financial collapse. She apprised the students about specialised courses in Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Rights/ Copyrights and Family Laws designed according to shifting global socio economic problems. She reported that the number of students studying in US is growing every year and presently crossed one lakh mark and there is largest number of Indian students in US Universities. The degree programs in US in specialised fields like Cyber Crimes, Copy/Patent Rights are affordable and there is also scope for part-time job opportunities for students during the courses to meet their cost of education. She also explained that out of total student’s visa applications 80% students awarded visa. She also stressed that the students can directly apply for study visa and restrain from any visa agents as all the information is available on the internet and students can file their visa application online.
Mr. Vikram, Library Officer, American Library, New Delhi informed about legal information resources available for laws students in India. He that many legal databases like Lexis Nexis can be accessed through American library, which also provide selective dissemination of information on legal research problems.
Prof. Paramjit Jaswal, Chaiarman Department of Laws, spoke about legal education in Indian universities and need for pursuing courses on comparative international laws relating to emerging fields like cyber crimes, information technology, corporate law, competition law etc.
