Chandigarh: August 18, 2008 : As a consequence of water level of Satluj river increased breaching the anti flood bund near Sanghera village, Army once again extended its helping hand to civil administration in flood affected areas of District Ferozepur and Moga to save hundreds of lives. On being requisitioned for aid, nine flood relief columns of Golden Arrow division immediately moved to affected areas to help the people in distress. The Army columns consisted Infantry, Engineers, medical and recovery teams to cater for all eventualities. Flood relief operations were carried out in Sanghera and Bhogewala villages of Moga district and Khanna Kalan, Asharf Ali Shah, Mundi Chhuri Mar, Amir Shah, Kassu Wala Mor, Malang Shah Wala, Nangal, Gurali, Lalleh, Chak Khanna, Bandala and Mandala villages of Ferozepur district using Army boats.
During rescue operation nearly 1500 people including ladies and children were evacuated to safer places. Affected people were provided with basic amenities and essential medical cover. Army columns have also established communication in record time to facilitate rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
The whole hearted support of the Army Contingent has been widely appreciated by affected population and civil administration. The local population was very sure that it was only Army who could rescue them from crisis. With the flood like situation still on, Army will continue rendering its support to civil administration as a sentinel, senior Army officials said.
