22 Sep : The CBI on Tuesday filed chargesheet in the Guwahati special court against an alleged mastermind and three other persons in the sensational murder of an officer of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Tarun Kumar Dutta.
In the chargesheet filed three years after he was killed outside his house in Guwahati, the agency has slapped charges of murder and criminal conspiracy against the accused.
Dutta was murdered on 12th September, 2006 at about 8.45 PM outside his house, CBI spokesperson said in New Delhi.
“The case was initially investigated by Chandmari Police Station in Guwahati. The sensational murder of a senior government official had created ripples in the area. Later, on December 17, 2007 the case was transferred to CBI and was investigated by Special Crime Branch, Kolkata,” he said.
The investigations revealed Dutta had seized huge consignments of Ganja smuggled by the gang of a mastermind of this murder case on several occasions, the official said.
“The accused and his nephew had threatened Dutta but this did not deter him from performing his duty. One week prior to his murder, he seized their another Ganja consignment”, the official said.
On this, the main accused decided and conspired with his nephew and two others to kill the officer.
Dutta was shot by some unknown people outside his house as per a conspiracy hatched by the main accused, the spokesperson alleged.
“During the CBI investigation, two assailants have been identified. One of them has since died.
Therefore, CBI filed chargesheet against the mastermind of the murder case, his nephew, a conspirator and another accused today.
The mastermind of this case, a dreaded name in narcotic world, is presently in Guwahati Jail,” the official said.
CBI has requested the court to keep the investigation open as more chargesheets may be filed once other accused persons are traced and arrested.
