Chandigarh: 02 June : With a view in to save Sukhna Lake from further degradation NCC Directorate based in Chandigarh launched “Operation Save Sukhna” on 14 May 2010. In continuation of the operation 150 NCC Cadets including 62 girl cadets and staff from Chandigarh Group have participated in the operation today. Numerous tractor- trolley loads of silt were removed from the lake. Various new and cost-effective techniques of removing weeds from Sukhna Lake are being tried. Officers from Navy and Army wing of NCC closely supervised the operation.
It may be recalled that the lake was built in 1958 across Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream that flows down from the Shivalik Hills. Over the fast five decades or so, its capacity has reduced due to accumulation of tonnes of silt in the waterbody. However, Sukhna Lake is one of the main attractions in Chandigarh, which lures tourists, and morning and evening walkers. NCC also utilizes the lake for training the cadets in watermanship activities.
