3 Sep : In the backdrop of a large number of substandard teachers entering the profession, a govt survey has suggested revision of the curriculum and syllabus of teaching education programme and strengthening of District Institute of Teacher Education (DIET) and SCERTs.
The government had asked NCERT to evaluate the teachers’ education programme.
The NCERT survey covered the DIETs, Colleges of Teacher Education (CTE), Institutes of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
In its report ‘Comprehensive Evaluation of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Teacher Education’, NCERT has recommended that the syllabus of pre-service teacher education programmes at all stages be reviewed and revised.
Besides, it suggested that the two-year B.Ed programme be promoted in all teacher training institutions and universities.
A stipend of Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 should be provided to students during their nine-month internship programme, the report submitted to the HRD Ministry this week said.
The qualifications and salary of structures laid down by UGC should be followed for all academic positions in the proposed teacher education institutions.
