6 Aug : Opposition BJP and Akali Dal on Thursday raised a storm in Rajya Sabha over reported move to create a separate Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee for Haryana leading to the adjournment of the House till 1200 hours.
Soon after new members took oath or affirmation, BJP and Akali Dal members were on their feet demanding suspension of the Question Hour to discuss the issue.
Chairman Hamid Ansari said the issue was discussed in the morning and it was decided that the matter will be taken up after the Question Hour.
Till now, there is only one SGPC for Punjab and Haryana but now a separate body for Haryana is being proposed.
Amid slogan shouting, the Chairman asked members to take their seats and allow the Question Hour to be taken up.
“SGPC todna nahi chalega (SGPC will not be allowed to be divided),” shouted the opposition members as Ansari adjourned the House till 1200 hours.
Lok Sabha was adjourned twice on Thursday during Question Hour when Opposition members protested against the move to create a separate Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee by the Congress government in Haryana.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, Akali Dal members opposed creation of a separate SGPC for Haryana.
Ratan Singh Ajnala and Harsimrat Kaur (Akali Dal) said the Congress government in Haryana had taken this step to create a controversy ahead of the assembly elections in the state. They were joined by BJP and JD(U) members.
As BJP members raised their voice in protest, Ajnala and Kaur rushed to the well of the House.Yogi Adityanath (BJP) said this was interference by the government in religious affairs, while Kaur said this issue was very important for the community.
Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee told the Opposition not to disrupt the Question Hour over this issue, which could be taken up later.
Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon.
