11 Aug : A high-level team has found environmental violations by the Mayawati govt in the upcoming Ambedkar memorial in Noida and action is being considered in the matter, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said.
“We are deciding what action can be taken in the matter as our team has found violation of environmental norms by the Uttar Pradesh government which has been denying the allegations,” Ramesh said at the sidelines of a function at New Delhi on Tuesday.
He further said the view of a Supreme Court panel will also be taken as it has recently visited the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, adjacent to the park,” he added.
Even as the issue has snowballed into controversy with the Centre and Mayawati Government coming in conflict with each other, Ramesh said, “We do not want to politicize the issue.”
“Whatever we will do it will be within the law. Many people had complained to us alleging a large number of trees were being cut, so we had to sent our team to investigate into the matter,” the Union Minister added.
If there is a violation of law we will take appropriate action in the matter, he said pointing that the memorial was too close to the protected sanctuary.
The UP government is accused of felling over 6,000 trees in the 33-hectare area to make way for statues of Mayawati, Kanshi Ram and B R Ambedkar.
