24 Nov : In Assam, Lachit Divas has been observed all over the State with various programmes on Tuesday. The day is being observed to remember Lachit Borphukan, the great legendary hero and Commander of the then Ahom Kingdom in the State. Lachit Borphukan thwarted a strong attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ramsingh to take back Kamrup in the battle of Saraighat in 1671.
His heroism during the last and decisive battle, when he inspired a dispirited and retreating Ahom naval force to fight back in spite of an illness, has made him into a national hero. The Mughals were decisively defeated and forced to retreat from Guwahati. The State Revenue Minister Dr. Bhumidhar Barman paid rich tributes to the great hero of the then Ahom Kingdom at the main function organized at Lachit Uddan at Jalukbari in Guwahati. He also laid floral wreath on the statue of Lachit Barphukan.
The Director General of Assam Police Mr. Shankar Barua and other top police officials were present on the occasion. Similar programmes are being organized across the State to remember the heroism of Lachit Borphukan.
