1 May : With spurt in militant violence in Assam, the Centre on Thursday held a high level meeting to review the security situation in the state, particularly in North Cachar Hill district which has witnessed frequent attacks on security personnel and railway property.
During the 90-minute meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, various steps, including strengthening coordination among security forces, were discussed, a Home Ministry official said.
Steps to resume train services in the North Cachar Hill district at the earliest were also discussed, he said.
The state has been witnessing bouts of insurgency-related incidents and latest attacks claiming 12 lives, including five security men, were reported on 20th April.
Since trains have become the main target of suspected Dima Halam Daoga (Jewel) militants in Assam, the meeting, attended by Director General of Railway Protection Force and senior officials of the Railway Board, decided to take effective steps to resume train services at the earliest.
Train services between Lumding and Badarpur have been suspended for several days following six subsequent attacks on several trains running in the section recently.
