The 51st Annual Convocation of Government College for Girls, Sec-11, Chandigarh was held today. Mr. Pradip Mehra, IAS, Advisor to the Administrator, Chandigarh Administration was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Mrs. Raji P. Srivastava, IAS, Special Secretary Finance and Director Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration was the Guest of Honour. The Convocation was inaugurated by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. The students presented Saraswati Vandana to invoke the Goddess of learning and knowledge. In his Convocation Address, Chief-Guest Sh. Pradip Mehra congratulated the Graduates and Post-Graduates and motivated them to keep on reinventing and upgrading themselves. Education, he stressed is an important instrument and medium of change, as it opens the windows of your mind. He emphasized that there was a crucial need of up gradation and maintenance of infra-structure of educational institutions in Chandigarh. On this occasion, Sh.Pradip Mehra was kind and generous enough to announce a grant of Rs.7.5 crore for the construction of an additional hostel, construction of a new classroom block, a multi-media centre, renovation and repair of toilets, construction of food court in place of old canteens and providing ACs in all departmental rooms. As many as 962 students were awarded Graduate and Post-Graduate degrees. 61 Post-Graduate degrees were awarded in Public Administration, Economics, Dance, Music Vocal and Music Instrumental. In the Graduate category 69 degrees for Commerce Honours, 55 for Commerce,29 for BCA, 222 for Honours in Arts, 357 for Arts and 169 Science graduates were awarded degrees in Medical, Non-Medical and Computer Science. Students who had excelled in academics by their outstanding performance in the Panjab University examinations were honoured by the Chief Guest. Ms. Monika Thakur was awarded the Roll of Honour and Medal for standing First in MA Music Instrumental. She was also awarded B.P.Bagchi Medal and Dr. Panna Lal Medal. Ms. Madhu Bala was awarded Roll of Honour and Dr. Panna Lal Medal for standing First in MA Music Vocal. Ms. Shallu Saini was awarded the Roll of Honour and Medal for standing First in MA Dance, Ms. Rupinder Aulakh was awarded the Roll of Honour and Medal for standing First in MA Public Administration and Ms. Raj Kumari was awarded Roll of Honour for standing Third in MA Public Administration. Students who topped in the BA Honours Examination of Panjab University were also honoured with the Roll of Honour and Medal. They are: Ms. Arpana in Music Instrumental,Ms. Bani Narula in Psychology, Ms. Deepika Jain in Geography, Ms. Heena Chhabra in Sociology and Ms. Supreet Sethi in French. Earlier presenting the College Annual Report, Mrs. Promila Kaushal, Principal of the College highlighted the glorious achievements of the students in the field of academics. She also enlisted the advancements made by the college during the last year in various fields.
