By Archit Watts , Chandigarh, August 9 : Who will bell these rich brats “student leaders” of Panjab University? is a big question for Panjab University authorities.
The new academic session (2009-10) of Panjab University commenced this week and the election of students’ council is still far ahead. But it seems the poll fever has already begun as the students’ unions have begun defacing the campus, even the date of polls has not yet announced.
Though the apex court of India has imposed a ban on all types of printed material get used for the campaign of students’ elections, but still these students’ unions are on a spree to deface the campus by pasting their printed posters and stickers around the campus.
Cocking a snook, at rules, these student leaders are pasting posters, stickers on the walls, mirrors, doors and the notice boards, freely. It seems university authorities are not much concerned about this grave issue.
In a quick survey, it was found that posters and stickers were pasted everywhere. The water tanks on the terraces were also not spared. Last year also the situation was not much different.
“A strict action must be taken against the violators, but no one dares to stop the student leaders, that’s the major reason they do what they want,” said a hosteller of Panjab University on the condition of anonymity.
When contacted a student activist, he said that as per their party’s concern they had not violated any law. Except of two or three major parties, no other party violates the rules or guidelines issued by the university authorities.
Similarly, the position of city colleges is not much different and blatant violations of the Supreme Court’s orders or defacement of public property can be seen in every nook and corner.
Despite repeated attempts to contact vice-chancellor, RC Sobti, he was not available for his comments.
What the apex courts directs:
* Printed posters and banners will not be allowed, only hand made ones are permitted.

* Candidates have to put a limit of Rs 5,000 on poll expenses.
