Jorawer Singh, Chandigarh, August 16, 2009: Sheetla Saptami dedicated to Goddess Sheetala Devi is worshiped every year Shukla Paksha Sapthami thithi during Shravan month. As it is believed that this keeps away Small Pox and Chicken Pox away from the Children, devotees let their children also participate in orthodox rituals including piercing of skin, tongue, cheeks and what not. The entire proces is done without use of any ansthesia, without any medical supervision and with self deviced surgical methods using instruments without any sterlisation.
The administration fully aware of this happening year on year on the Amavasya of Shravana masam, still no police, government officials seem to be interested to intervene in rituals like this, that to in a city like Chandigarh, boasting of having one of the highest levels of literacy in the country.
TheIndiaPost Photo, needs no elaboration of the pain and fear on the face of this child who had been subject to cheek peircing a few moments ago.
I have no words for these things, i only says that it is only “aastha” May wish that Shitla Mata Take care of their childs.
I think we should come out of this superstition/ orthodox. Government along with NGOs should intervene and educate the society and take the people to right directions…
Gosh!!!!!sssshhh
It scary …..and time to change our belief system. This is the true semblance and opinion of our country outside.Cant ask for a divine intervention to stop this.
