CHANDIGARH, MARCH 16 : Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association trainees had a mixed luck on the opening day of the $ 15,000 ITF Men’s Futures at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium here today.
Wild card Vijayant Malik, a product of Rural Tennis Academy of CLTA, had a smooth sailing in the singles second round as he demolished the challenge of American Richard Johnson in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the singles first-round match.
However, CLTA product and wild card entrant Navinder Pal Singh was outplayed by fifth seed Divij Sharan in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
In a marathon first-round encounter Vishnu Vardhan of India displayed determination to pull off a mild surprise by shocking fourth seed Patrick Taubert of Germany in three-evenly contested sets 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
In another marathaon first-round match Navdeep Singh of India overcame a stiff resistance from his country man Ranjeet Virali Murugesan in well-contested three sets 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2.
Wild card Ronak Manuja was shown the door by I-Ta Chen of Chinese Taipei in straight sest 6-4, 6-2.
