CHANDIGARH, NOV 22 : Fine knocks by Inderjeet (67) and Umesh Kaira (56 no) enabled Godrej CC defeat Fortis CC by 59 runs in the semi-final match of the Vth Defender Cup being organised by the Chandigarh Sports Club at the Sector 16 Stadium here today.
Batting first after winning the toss, Godrej CC were given a good start by openers Inderjeet and skipper Vaneet Chawla as they put on 76 runs in just 12 overs. But the fairy tale start came to an end when Vaneet Chawla was adjudged lbw to Vishal. But Inderjeet continued to bat patiently.
Jai Kapil could contribute only 11 runs off 11 balls. Inderjeet was out on the last ball of the same over as Naveen Saini held on to a catch off his own bowling and got rid off inderjeet.
Thereafter Umesh Kaira scored at a very brisk pace, hitting almost every other ball for a four. There were only two dot balls in his innings of 56 runs off just 24 balls. He hit six boundaries and two sixes. He punished Naveen Saini for 20 runs in the last over of the innings.
Naveen Saini picked up two important wickets. Godrej CC scored 192 for 4 in 25 overs.
In reply, the Fortis CC batsmen virtually threw away their wickets. Only Ravi batted well and stayed on till the last over of the match but in vain. Vijaypal bowled superbly to get rid off 3 of the batsmen. Fortis CC were bowled out for 133 in 24.3 overs. As a result Godrej CC won by 59 runs and entered the the finals of the tournament.
