CHANDIGARH, NOV 7 : Sports Authority of India badminton coach Surinder Mahajan, coach of the Indian team alongwith Sanjeev Sachdeva, today expressed his satisfaction with the performance of Indian junior team which won three gold, two silver and one bronze medals in four events in Youth Commonwealth Games at Pune from October12 to 18. As many as 29 shuttlers from 29 countries competed in the CW Youth Games.
It is first time that India won so many prestigious medals in an international tournament. Last time India had won won one silver medal at Australia in 2006.
Indian badminton squad again won bronze medal in the World Junior Badminton Championship this year. It was the first medal by an Indian in an International tournament.
In individual events Guru Sai Dutt of India won bronze medal in singles and Saina Nehwal brought biggest laurels as she won gold medal in singles.
It may be mentioned that the entire team along with coaches was in Jakarata for intensive training for more than one month. It was followed by an intensive coaching camp at Hyderabad under the supervision of these coaches.
Surinder Mahajan, who was as chief coach at NIS Patiala, now has been transferred to Chandigarh and posted at Panjab University coaching centre.
Chandigarh Badminton Association secretary TPS Puri was confident that with the return of Mahajan, the standards of badminton in Chandigarh would further improve.The leading badminton players of Chandigarh who use to practice under Mahajan were happy players that Mahajan has been sent back to Chandigarh and posted at Panjab University.
