CHANDIGARH, NOV 13 : Three new national records were established on the second day of the National Junior Athletics Championship being conducted in Mysore today.
Prabhjot Singh of Punjab set a new national record in discus throw for boys under 18 category with a massive throw of 58.10 metres. The Punjab thrower erased Simranjit Singh’s previous record of 55.35 metres. Haryana thrower Akash Antil finished second with a throw of 55.49 metres. He also improved upon the national record. Sushil Tripathi of UP took bronze in 51.41 metres.
Saba Bhagat of Maharashtra, who could not participate in the recent Commonwealth Youth Games due to last moment injury, bounced back with a spectacular performance in the boys under 18 hurdles creating a new national record of 14.06s (old record 14.12s of Akhil Krishanan of Kerala ) thanks to Kesava Ramani of Tamilnadu ( 2nd place with 14.34s) who gave tough fight till last hurdle. Anil Soren of West Bengal who was pre race favourite and arch rival of Saba took bronze in 14.93s.
Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist G. Gayatri of Tamil Nadu lived up to the expectations to win the title in the girls under 18 years 100 metres hurdles with a new national record of 14.02s. She improved upon her own national record of 14.04s set during National Youth Championship. However her personal best of 14.00s clocked during Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune which was in under 19 years category. Her team-mate N. Hemashree took sliver with 14.26s (bettered National record) while Jyothi Krishna of Kerala won bronze medal in 15.10s.
The most awaited event of the day, the 400 metres for girls under-20 event which was a tussle for top honours between Tintu Luka and M.R Poovamma was won by Tintu hands down.
Kerala were leading the medal tally with 10 gold, nine silver and 7 bronze medals. Tamil Nadu were at the second spot with 7-5-3. Uttar Pradesh (5-3-2), Karnataka (3-1-2), Punjab (3-0-0) and AP (1-2-4) were in that order.
