24 August : The two major devils challenging our society today are use of polythene and drug addiction. Their terror is deeper in rural areas, where lack of awareness and low literacy rates are their main support system.
There is a strong need to make efforts to curb the terror of these devils. North Zone Cultural Centre, Chandigarh, have made an attempt in this direction with the help of artists of city based theatre group-Theatre Age. In a manner unique to Theatre Age, their young artists have prepared two musical dance dramas devoted to creating awareness about the serious hazards of use of drugs and polythene. First, titled “Poly Don” narrates the story of the demon of polythene-Poly Don, how it survives and attacks society and ultimately how with the use of paper bags and cloth bags, we can conquer the Poly Don.
Second play, named – “Giraft” (the clutches) is a soul stirring story about a young boy of an affluent family, who, deprived of affection from his family falls into the clutches of drug addicts and ultimately ends-up in the death trap under influence of drugs.
Both these plays are being staged in six villages of Chandigarh. First show was staged on 17th August at village Burail. The public response was simply overwhelming as the plays succeeded in touching the heart of audience. Both the plays have been conceived, written and directed by Zulfiqar Khan and choreographed by Vinod Azad.
