Barinder Saluja, Chandigarh, Dec. 03: The under-14 team of the Sacred Heart Convent Sr. Secondary School, Sector 26 clinched the Silver Medal in the CBSE Schools National Chess Championship 2010 which concluded in Durgapur, West Bengal today. The School had bagged the North Zone Championship in October at New Delhi to qualify for the Nationals.
During the five-round Championship, Sacred Heart beat Jawahar School of Nyeveli, DPS Allahabad, PS Sr Sec School Chennai and Modern School New Delhi to score eight out of ten points and bag the second spot in the tournament. The only game they lost was to the Champions, the Bhavan School of Nagpur.
Led by Arunima Goyal of Class VII, the team comprised Tanya Kaushal of Class VII, Tarini Goyal of Class IV, Kashish Kaushal of Calss III and Kritika Kapila of Class VIII. Individually, the girls scored 16.0 out of 20 points.
Tarini Goyal, who represented the team on the fourth board, won all her five games to bag the Board Prize.
In the Individual Rapid CBSE Chess National, also held at the same venue, Arunima Goyal bagged the Bronze Medal in the Under -14 category by winning four of the five games she played. Arshjot Kaur of Class VIII represented the School in the U-19 category.
Sister Sebastina, Principal of the School has congratulated the girls on securing the Silver Medal in the Nationals. Their performance has been specifically commendable as it was the first time ever that the School had played the CBSE Chess Nationals, she added. Mrs Veena Chauhan, the sports teacher of the School who was accompanying the children in Durgapur has also expressed her satisfaction on the team’s performance.
