2 Feb : Chandigarh, February 2, 2010: Today, around 150 students of Saupins School led by their Director Anuradha Saupin and volunteers of Yuvsatta –an NGO participated in Cleanliness Drive at Sukhna Lake to mark the observance of World Wetland Day.
Students marched from regulator end to Lakeview Cafeteria carrying placards on preservation of our precious heritage places like Sukhna Lake and clearing on the way the litter like empty Coke/Pepsi/Juice cans, ice-cream cups, packaging material, pan-gutka sachets, polythene bags strewn alongside the Sukhna Lake.
Addressing the students after the cleanliness drive Mr. Ishwar Singh, Director, Department of Environment, said that February 2 is observed as ‘World Wetland Day’ to further spread and strengthen the movement for conserving biodiversity and fight climate change. He said the biggest challenge today is to live in harmony with man and nature. Quoting Gandhi he added that ‘mother Earth can provide for everyone’s need, but not for any one’s greed’, so each one of us should individually commit to responsible and sustainable consumption.
Thanking the participants Anuradha Saupin shared that this year Saupins community Service Organization identified itself with the cause of spreading awareness in the common people and young minds about importance of maintaining cleanliness at landmarks like Sukhna which enhance the beauty of the city.
The awareness drive ended with presentation of songs by School students on importance of nature and environment in our life. Prominent amongst those who interacted with the children includes Parmod Sharma & Ajatshatru from Yuvsatta.
