6 Nov : President Pratibha Patil has expressed concern over the growing practice of female foeticide, saying it would damage the male-female ratio in the country and disturb social fabric.
Inaugurating the International Arya Mahasammelan in Mathura, she said, “Elimination of female foetus will not only lead to male-female imbalance but also disturb social equilibrium.”
The President also termed child marriage as a “curse” and said early motherhood would adversely affect the health of women.
“Child marriage is a curse as it leads to major problems like girl attaining early motherhood, more children, adverse impact on the health of mother and children,” the First Citizen said.
Child marriage would also lead to over population jeopardising the economic and social structure of the country, Patil said.
