12 Nov : Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, Sachopra Vero exhorted the Zonal Taxi drivers during the second day of the training programme under ‘Year of Capacity Building’ this morning at Old MLA hostel building, Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion the Deputy Commissioner said that drivers should be aware of their roles and responsibilities in the society and appreciated the RTO for organizing such a programme. He said that discipline is very important in any field and urged the drivers to learn and benefit from the training programme. Stressing on the roles of the drivers, the Deputy Commissioner said that drivers should treat their profession with utmost sincerity since the lives of the passengers are in their hands. He said that Zonal Taxi drivers should be more cautious and sincere since they often travel long distances and thereby the safety and comfort of the passengers should be of concern.
Referring to the traffic jams in the State capital, the Deputy Commissioner mentioned that while the roads are also narrow and there are less chances of expansion, he said that the drivers should contribute to the easing of the traffic congestion instead of aggravating the problem. He said that in addition to the narrow roads, the traffic jams are becoming very serious due to the indiscipline of the drivers, wrong parking, and rash driving etc. He said that most drivers do not follow traffic rules/signals and this leads to more chaos. He therefore called upon the drivers to restrain themselves and follow necessary traffic rules and regulations which would go a long way in relieving the traffic jams.
The Deputy Commissioner also said that drivers should maintain their vehicles properly and go for regular servicing. This would prevent accidents occurring due to mechanical failure. He also urged the drivers not to practice drunken driving.
RTO, Kohima, Mezayi Tetseo in his keynote address said that the lifestyle of the people has improved due to the presence of vehicles. He said that transport is the biggest sector providing employment to the people, next only to agriculture and that drivers are the biggest contributors in making the nation economically strong. The RTO further called upon the drivers to expand their knowledge and skills so as to provide better public service.
