Y.S. RANA , KHARAR (Punjab)— Enact us team of Dr. S.S Bhatnagar, University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET), Panjab University , Chandigarh has organized a mass awareness camp on “Benefits of family type biogas plants” in collaboration with Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) at village Kasauli of Kharar block in district Mohali on Monday.
Aim making rural people aware about the importance and benefits of biogas plants, so that more and more families come forward for installing biogas plants in their houses. The official of the PEDA said that the awareness camp was a part of the project ‘BIO-INDHAN’ which has been currentlyunder-taken by the Enactus team under able guidance of Enactus faculty advisor Prof.Seema Kapoor. This project main objective is to shift the focus of people from using wood as fuel for cooking to biogas, which is a clean and green alternative.
The camp will be an endeavour to encourage villagers to use biogas as a fuel as a renewable, cheap and non-polluting energy source. This family type biogas plant uses animal excreta and organic waste as the raw material and can generate 6 cubic metres of biogas daily fulfilling cooking needs of 15-20 people, says the official. It produces no smoke and thus eliminates the health threats of the ‘traditional chulha’.
Also the manure, produced as a by product can also be an excellent fertilizer. This mass awareness camp is an attempt to bring more participation of the masses and to increase the number of beneficiaries.
The first biogas plant under this project ‘Bio Indhan’ was installed at Kasauli village which was inaugurated on March 8 on International Women’s Day. Under the aegis of PEDA, the team has already set up another biogas plant at village Bhasindi of Kharar Block in district Mohali. “PEDA has plan to install many family-type biogas.
