20 August :The Tamil Nadu government has announced that it would soon formulate a new policy for the welfare of the physically disabled.Chief Minister M Karunanidhi made the announcement when a delegation of physically challenged persons called on him to submit a memorandum at the Secretariat, according to an official press release.
Announcing a slew of welfare measures, the release, quoting the Chief Minister, said the state government would request big corporate companies to follow a job-reservation policy for physically handicapped persons while setting up units in the state.
A committee headed by Social Welfare Minister would monitor and ensure the filling up of the three percent job reservation for such persons in government jobs, working out to about 9000 vacancies of the existing three lakh jobs.
Karunanidhi also announced exemption from paying of tuition fee for such persons in government and aided colleges and open universities, besides announcing concession on ticket fares in state transport buses, the release added.
Earlier, physically disabled people had taken out a rally to highlight their demands.
