25 June : High school students in Uttar Pradesh need not lose heart if they fail in one subject in their 10th board examination as they can still go to the next class.
The state government on Thursday decided that students, who pass in five out of the six subjects in the final examination, will be promoted to the next class from the next academic session.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet, Chief Minister Mayawati told reporters in Lucknow. She said the earlier compartmental system will be restarted so that a student, failing in a particular subject, can reappear in it.
The marksheets will carry grades and credits, she said adding that the marks secured by the students in individual subjects would not, however, be mentioned."This new system would be implemented from the academic session 2010-11," she said.To do away with anomalies in the fee structure of non-government schools recognised by the CBSE, ICSE and the Madhyamik Shiksha Board, committees headed by respective district magistrates will be set up to work out a solution.
Minority institutions will, however, be exempted, she added.
