25 Nov ; CPI(M) has said the Liberhan Comm report has demolished the defence of BJP that Babri Masjid demolition was a “spontaneous movement” but has laid itself open to the charge of a political bias by not pinpointing the failure of Centre to take action.
The CPI(M) Politburo said the Commission has made “a clear and sharp” indictment of the RSS, the BJP and other constituents of the Sangh Parivar.
“The report demolishes the defence put out by the BJP that it was a spontaneous movement which went out of control and lays bare the meticulous planning which went into the demolition. It shows the utter disregard for the Indian constitution by the BJP and the Sangh Parivar.
“However, the report fails to pinpoint the failure of the Centre to take action at the appropriate time to prevent such a crime…By giving a virtual clean chit to the then Central Government, the Commission has laid itself open to the charge of a political bias,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The Action Taken Report (ATR) placed by the government on the basis of some of the Commission’s recommendations is weak and inadequate.”It displays a lack of political will to bring those responsible to justice,” the party said.
Citing the example of the outcome of the findings of the Sri Krishna Commission (that probed into the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai), the party said, those who have been indicted by Commissions for communal violence have got off scot-free.
Govt should pursue case as per Liberhan findings: CPI-M
The CPI(M) has asked the govt to pursue cases against those found responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid by the Liberhan Comm, saying the 6th Dec 1992 incident was the “most serious assault” on India’s secular democracy.
“Though justice has been delayed for 17 long years, in this case, justice must be done. If the law has been broken, legal action has to be taken. Concrete action must be taken against the perpetrators on the basis of the evidence gathered in the report,” CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury told reporters in New Delhi on Tuesday.
He said the main issue of giving exemplary punishment to those found guilty of “most serious assault on our secular democratic polity should not be deflected” by the demand for a probe into the alleged leakage of the report to the media.
The Liberhan Commission “only confirms that the preplanned conspiracy” to demolish the Babri Masjid and its recommendations should be taken in concert with the chargesheet filed in 1997 in the designated court in Lucknow and its verdict, Yechury said.
To questions on Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s alleged involvement, he said the full report needed to be studied to confirm whether it contains any such reference.
“However, Vajpayee himself has gone on record to say that he was asked to remain in Lucknow and not proceed to Ayodhya, which he did. Who asked him and why?”
Asked whether a “soft” approach had been adopted towards the then P V Narasimha Rao government in the Liberhan report, Yechury said the government did not take any action despite being empowered by the National Integration Council in November 1992, days before the 6th December demolition.
He said while the Congress was blamed for “assaulting democracy in 1975” by imposing Emergency and later for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, BJP was responsible for “launching an assault on our secular democratic polity”.
“The Congress has apologised, though belatedly. Will the BJP do so? But what we saw today was that BJP members started chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ inside the House after the Liberhan report was tabled,” Yechury said.
