By- Kalyani singh, Msc , Home Science College,Chandigarh :The Department of Clothing and Textiles, Government Home Science College , Chandigarh organized a presentation on Silk Mark in collaboration with Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The key presenters were Mr. T. D. Koshy, Deputy Director, SMOI, Mr. Devender Singh and Mr. S.L.Jain from the Central Silk Board . The power point presentation highlighted the quality movement in silk. During the presentation vast information was provided on the assurance of purity of silk. The students were enlightened on the Queen of fabrics about its manufacture, popularity, pro-consumer information, production and available products of silk, generic promotion of the fabric, and efforts on building its brand equity at home and internationally. The audience was given knowledge to be aware consumers when buying silk and the possible imitations. The importance of the label of silk mark while purchasing the fabric was emphasized. The classification and identification of fibers in terms of Mulberry silk, Tasar silk, Eri silk and Muga silk was given in detail. The audience had an active interaction with the experts and clarified all their queries.
The students were quizzed on the information delivered to them. Kanika Sharma, Priyanka Dhawan and Chandana won the prizes for the quiz. The principal of the college Dr. Mrs. Rita G. Singh, also from the specialization of clothing and textiles further emphasized the need to be intelligent consumers so as to elevate the qualifying standards for buying silk. She acknowledged the efforts made by the experts from the Ministry of Textiles for creating the relevant awareness and pro-consumer information.
