The Scheme was discontinued by the Government of India with effect from 1st April, 2002. The decision was taken based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee chaired by Shri P.K. Umashankar (Ex-Director, Indian Institute of Public Administration) and discussion with the State Health Secretaries.
Public Health being a State subject, the State Governments were informed at the time of discontinuation of the Scheme that they were free to continue with the existing/improved/amended Village Health Guide Scheme in accordance with their requirements from their own funds after March, 2002.
There is no proposal to reintroduce the said scheme. The Health Minister, Shri J P Nadda stated this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha here today.
