Chandigarh, March 25, 2025 – The 4th M.S. Johal Day was commemorated with deep reverence and heartfelt tributes in memory of the late Professor Mohinder Singh Johal at Hotel Shivalik View, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The event was organized by his family and devoted students to honor his remarkable contributions to the field of zoology, academia, and research.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious M.S. Johal Award for the year 2025 to Professor Neeta Sehgal from the Department of Zoology, University of Delhi. She was recognized for her outstanding contributions to Fisheries Sciences and received a prize of ₹1 lakh. The gathering saw the presence of over 100 distinguished guests attending in person, while many others joined virtually to pay tribute to the esteemed professor.
Eminent scientists, academicians, and former colleagues of Prof. M.S. Johal shared cherished memories, reflecting on his invaluable contributions to research and education. Among the notable speakers were Prof. R.K. Kohli, Founder Vice-Chancellor of Amity University, Punjab, and former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab; Prof. D.N. Jauhar, esteemed professor of law and Former Vice-Chancellor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra; Dr. S.C. Agrawal, former Director in the Department of Fisheries, Government of Haryana; Prof. K.K. Bhasin from the Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh; and Prof. B.D. Joshi, former Head of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences at Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar. They spoke about the deep impact Prof. Johal had on the field of Fisheries Sciences, while also reminiscing about his dedication to academic excellence and mentorship.
Among other distinguished attendees were Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, former Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Prof. B.K. Thelma from the University of Delhi, both of whom paid glowing tributes to Prof. Johal’s immense contributions.
The event saw the presence of Prof. Johal’s family, including his wife, Mrs. Johal, and his son, Harman Johal (Sunny), who traveled from the USA to attend and organize the ceremony. Former students of Prof. Johal, including Prof. Anish Dua, Prof. Yogesh Kumar Rawal, Prof. Onkar, and Dr. Ravneet Kaur, among others, expressed their deep gratitude for his guidance and mentorship over the years.
