Dr.Digambar Behera, Professor of Pulmonary Medicine, PGIMER Chandigarh and at present Director, LRS Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, New Delhi has been selected for the third time by the Selection Committee for ICMR Awards and Prizes for Amrut Mody Unichem Prize (Chest Diseases) in recognition of his signigicant contributions in biomedical research.
Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Hon’ble Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India will give away the award. The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled to be held in near future at New Delhi.
Dr Behera is already a two-time winner of Dr. B.C. Roy Award (Medical Council of India) in the year 2000 & 2004, given by the President of India. Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh since 1978 is currently on deputation as Director, Lala Ram Sarup Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, New Delhi an autonomous body of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. He is the President of National College of Chest Physicians (India) and Indian Society for Study of Lung Cancer, Chairman of the Tuberculosis Scientific Section of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (The Union) has published over 279 papers in various International/ National journals. Author of Text book of Pulmonary Medicine, his main areas of interest are lung cancer, indoor air pollution and tuberculosis.
He is currently extending expert support to the National TB Control Programme to develop various guidelines for TB Control programme and Laboratory Development and Management of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis, in the country. Dr Behera gives credit for his achievement to PGIMER, Chandigarh and his department there.
