Chandigarh, August 6, 2009: Today, on the occasion of Hiroshima Day and as part of an ongoing ‘Forgiveness Week’ in the city Schools, 6th Inter-School Gandhi Quiz was jointly organized by Yuvsatta, Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti and Peace Club of GGSSS, Sector 20 B, total 21 teams from different Schools of the city participated in the quiz contest. And a team of five people led by Dr. Manish Sharma of Department of Gandhian Studies, Panjab University conducted the quiz. And the quiz was based on three books by Mahatma Gandhi, namely his Autobiography ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’, ‘Hind Swaraj’ and ‘Constructive Programme’.
Saroj Mittal, DEO (Schools), Chandigarh Administration, Chief Guest of the day honoured the winners of Gandhi Quiz. And Winners were; 1st Prize bagged by Sarthak Gupta & Saurabh Sharma of St. Kabir Public School, 2nd Prize was awarded to team comprising of Pulkit Sood & Rajit Mohan of AKSIPS, Sector 41 and Shivam Grover and Rohan of Bhawan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh won the 3rd Prize. All the remaining participants were also given gandhian books and certificates. The winners will now compete for the prestigious President R. Venkataraman Rolling Trophy, gracefully instituted by the former President himself. Nationals will held at Gandhi Smriti, Tees January Marg, New Delhi (the national memorial of Mahatma Gandhi).
Addressing the youngsters Saroj Mittal said that in the environment of general decline of values and all its accompanying ills, Mahatma Gandhi is suddenly emerging as a possible answer to the global crisis of human values and degradation in all aspects of human life. She advocated that every student and teacher should read autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi which costs less than a scoop of Ice-cream, a chocolate or even branded gel pens and ‘is a joy for life’ was the advice to young students by Saroj Mittal. She narrated many instances from Gandhiji’s life and introduced to the students his multifaceted personality.
Anshu Singla, Principal of the School in her introductory remarks, sharing concerns for lasting peace and harmony said that youngsters have to work towards making the society tolerant. The need to nurture Gandhian values of truth and nonviolence in the hearts and minds of young children has arisen as urgent issue.
Giving information about the Gandhi Quiz, Mr. Parmod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta and organizer of the programme said that the Gandhi Quiz is now being organized in several parts of the country. It is an attempt to develop a knowledge base amongst students on the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi. Yuvsatta is also running such a programme promoting reading of Gandhiji’s life amongst the Jail inmates of Burail Model Jail.
