Chandigarh, March 14, 2025: World Kidney Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of March, serves as a global reminder of the importance of kidney health. This year’s theme, ‘Are Your Kidneys OK?’, focuses on raising awareness about kidney diseases, which are silently becoming a major global health threat.
Experts warn that kidney disease is on track to become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide in the coming years. In India, the situation is particularly concerning due to the rising prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, two of the most significant risk factors for kidney disease.
PGIMER’s Initiative for Kidney Health Awareness
To mark the occasion, Prof. Dr. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, Chandigarh, released an informative pamphlet prepared by the Department of Nephrology. This pamphlet aims to educate the public on:
✅ Red flag symptoms of kidney disease
✅ Risk factors that contribute to kidney damage
✅ Essential diagnostic tests for early detection
✅ Preventive measures to safeguard kidney health
Prof. Dr. Vivek Lal stressed that prevention is the key, urging people to adopt healthy lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension—the leading causes of kidney disease.
Kidney Disease: A Silent but Deadly Threat
Prof. Dr. H.S. Kohli, Head of the Department of Nephrology, expressed concern over the lack of public awareness. While heart disease is widely recognized as a major health issue, kidney disease remains underestimated despite its severe consequences.
“Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is like driving a vehicle without a reverse gear—once kidney function declines, it can only be slowed down, not reversed,” said Dr. Kohli.
He warned that uncontrolled blood pressure, poorly managed diabetes, and excessive use of painkillers accelerate kidney deterioration, much like an over-pressed accelerator in a car. Early detection is crucial to slow down this silent killer.
Combating Myths & Promoting Early Diagnosis
One of the biggest challenges in kidney disease management is misinformation. Many people delay diagnosis and treatment due to myths about kidney health, leading to advanced-stage disease that requires costly treatments like dialysis or kidney transplants.
As kidney donors remain scarce, prevention is not just a health necessity but also a financial imperative, saving both individuals and the nation from enormous healthcare costs.
A Call to Action: Prioritize Kidney Health!
On this World Kidney Day, PGIMER’s Department of Nephrology reaffirms its commitment to spreading awareness and educating the public about kidney disease prevention.
🔹 Regular check-ups and early diagnosis can save lives.
🔹 A healthy diet, regular exercise, and managing blood pressure & sugar levels can protect kidney health.
🔹 Spreading awareness can help prevent millions from suffering from kidney-related complications.
💙 Let’s pledge to prioritize kidney health—because a healthy kidney means a healthier life!
