19 Feb : International Pathology Update 2010, organized by Department of Histopathology, PGIMER, Chandigarh in association with World association of societies of pathology and laboratory medicine (WASPaLM) was inaugurated by Lt. General JR Bharadwaj, Member National Disaster Management Committee. In his inaugural adress he emphasized the importance of continuing medical education activities, to keep the medical professionals updated in the scenario of so many advances that are taking place almost on a daily basis. He stressed on the judicial use of ancillary techniques such as EM, Immunohistochemistry, In-situ hybridization, molecular and genetic studies to achieve the set goals of the best possible diagnosis. Accurate histopathology is also important in research and further scientific advances in various medical and surgical specialties. In this modern era, the departments need to be well equipped, as much as the pathologists need to be equipped with knowledge and skills.
Prof. KK Talwar welcomed the esteemed international and national faculty and highlighted the practice of autopsy in department of Histopathology of PGIMER, which is unique and the best in the world. This was followed by excellent presentations by Prof Seth Love who provided update information of Alzheimer’s disease. Prof. AK Banerjee a neuropathologist from PGIMER emphasized on need of methods to predict Alzheimer’s disease, believing that prevention is better than cure. Professor Hasleton talked about pathology of pulmonary hypertension and discussed some of the newer and rarer causes of pulmonary hypertension. Prof. Flanagan emphasized to look for minute morphological details for differentiating and subtyping different soft tissue tumours which is the need of an hour for proper patient management.
