By Anita, Australia : Long-time member of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Dr Don Bowley is Queensland’s Local Hero after receiving the award in the lead-up to the 2011 Australian of the Year Awards.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) today congratulated Dr Bowley for his dedication to his work over the past 14 years with the Mount Isa RFDS.
“To Don, being a doctor is not just a job; it’s a way of life,” a departmental spokesman said.
“Don received this award for the dedication, friendship and ongoing care he offers all patients in the surrounding remote townships, rural stations and Indigenous communities. Don has a well deserved reputation for being ‘the best in the west’.”
Australia’s Local Hero Award recognises the enormous contribution of Australian citizens, such as Don, who dedicate their lives to making their communities better places to live.
“It’s a wonderful honour for the department to once again sponsor Australia’s Local Hero Award and to celebrate the extraordinary work of ordinary Australians,” a departmental spokesman said.
“Don is an outstanding Australian citizen who is an inspiration to all of us.”
Following the state and territory award presentations, Australia’s Local Hero Award recipient will be announced on 25 January 2011 in Canberra.
