CHANDIGARH, OCT 15 : St John’s School, Sector 26 and St Stephen’s School, Sector 45 qualified to meet each other in the semi-final of the Chandigarh Sub-Junior (Boys) Football Championship for Coca Cola Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy being played at the Sector 17 Football Ground here today. The semi-finals will be played on October 17.
Two quarter-final matches were played today. St John’s School and St Stephen’s School registered victories in contrasting style. St John’s School outplayed Saupin’s School, Sector 32by 3-0 while Stephen’s School snuffed out the challenge of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 by 4-3 in tie-breaker after playing a goalless draw in the regulation period.
Playing with good understanding among their strikers, St John’s School opened their account in the 15th minute through Nitin. Then Krishna doubled the margin in the 27th minute while Gurteshwar rounded of the winners’ tally in the 32nd minute.
In the second quarter-final match, St Stephen’s and DAV Senior Secondary School had chances to score but failed to capitalize on these opportunities in the regulation period.
After a goalless draw, the organizers ordered the tie-breaker rule to resolve the deadlock.
Anirudh, Mohd Sajid, Kunsum and Pankaj converted their penalties while Chirag muffed his spot kick.
Scorers for DAVSSS in the tie-breaker session were Ankit, Om Nayak and Darshan. Robin and Manav wasted their penalties.
Meanwhile, Government Model School-36, Delhi Public School, Sector 40, St Xavier’s School, Sector 44 and Government Model School, Sector 26 moved into the quarter-final round.
Bolstered by six goals, including a hat-trick, by Samuel, Government Model School, Sector 36, handed out a 13-0 drubbing to St Joseph’s School, Sector 44. All players of the winning team are from the State-run Chandigarh Football Academy.
In a one-sided encounter, Samuel scored in the 7th, 17th, 19th, 20th, 30th and 40th minutes. Daniel (6th, 12th) contributed a brace. Other scorers for GMSSS-36 were K Lalramzauva (15th), Mohd Shaukat (32nd), Mohd Thelil (38th) and Nishu (28th, 42nd).
Delhi Public School, Sector 40 got the better of Tribune School-29 by 2-1. Eshaan (9th) and Sukhman (36th) scored for DPS-40. DPS had more possession of the ball and could have won by a bigger margin had they capitalized the chances which came their way. Tribune School reduced their margin through Ajay in the 14th minute.
In another quarter-final outing, St Xavier’s School beat Strawberry Field, Sector 26 by 2-0. Gagandeep (5th) and Thanzakhup (30th) were the goal-getters for Xavier’s School.
Sunday’s fixtures (Q-finals): Govt Model-36 vs Govt Model-26 (9 a.m.), DPS-40 vs St Xavier’s-44 (10 a.m.).
