By Y.S.RANA ,CHANDIGARH—MAR—12—In a rare case of surgery performed in the Pt. B.D.S. Post-graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak has given a new lease of life to a patient. Accidentally two iron rods pierced in the body of a man. The rods were removed from his body after six-hour long surgery.
This was stated by the Director of the Institute, Dr Chand Singh Dul and said that on Saturday last, 29-year-old Naveen was brought to the emergency ward of the institute in a very critical condition. His body was pierced with two iron bars. One iron bar was pierced into his left arm and another one into his abdomen causing severe damage to his diaphragm and left lung. His heart was narrowly saved from any damage as a rod pierced through his left lung came out near his neck.
It was a challenge for the doctors to take iron bars out without much harm to the organs of the patient. The patient was shifted from emergency ward to Lala Shyam Lal building and under the supervision of Dr S. S. Lohchab, Head of Department of Cardiac Surgery, Dr M. G. Vashisht, Dr Kuldeep Lallar, Dr Ashok Chehal, Dr Ashish and Dr Kiran from anesthesia department and Operation Theater Assistant (OTA) Dharamveer as a team started the operation. Dr Lohchab said that the iron bar which had pierced his arm was taken out easily but anesthesia team played a great role to take out other iron bar. Dr Kiran’s team gave separate ventilation to both the lungs so that the patient could breathe easily and the holes of left lung could be closed. It was first decided to cut and take out the Iron bar from patient’s chest, but it would have proved fatal for the patient. Therefore, the iron bar was pulled out of his body with great care and the lung was repaired.
While preventing excessive blood loss Dr Madan Gopal Vashisht from general surgery department, found many damages in his abdomen and repaired them. The patient is conscious and is under the observation of doctors and now the patient is reported to be out of danger.
