CHANDIGARH-March 14, 2012: With the aim to initiate a peer review of national and international sustainable development scenario, University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University is hosting a National Conference on ‘Sustainable Development: A Paradigm Shift from Principles to Rights’ on March 15-16, 2012. The Conference would be inaugurated by the ‘green judge’ Hon’ble Justice Kuldip Singh, Former Judge Supreme Court of India. The key-note address would be delivered by Prof. P.S. Jaswal, Vice- Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab and Mr. G.K. Chatrath, Senior Advocate, Dean Faculty of Law; Panjab University would be the guest of honour.
The conference, being coordinated by Ms. Sabina Salim and Dr. Anupam Bahri, would deliberate on issues of Sustainable development which are divided into four technical sessions. The first session would include discussions on Pillars of Sustainable Development: Economic Development, Social Equity and Environment Protection: Women and Children and Sustainable Development Forests, Indigenous People Rights and Sustainable Development Health and Environment Water and Food Security, Green Economy, Poverty Eradication and Inclusive Growth Trade, Environment and Sustainable Development.
The second technical session would include the relation between Law and Sustainable Development in the context of Contribution of the National and International Law towards sustainable development, Contribution of the Judiciary towards Sustainable development, Environmental Dispute Litigation and Resolution: Issues and Challenges Control and Prevention of Pollution, Liability for Environmental Damage and Emerging New Principles: Polluter Pays, Precautionary Principle etc. The third technical session would be for deliberations on Environment, Human Rights, and Development which will include, Environmental Justice and Sustainable development, Science, Technology and Sustainable Development: Issues and Challenges, and Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice. The last session would be for the discussion of the relation between Globalisation and Sustainable Development in the context of the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development, Biological Diversity, Sustainable use of its Resources, and Biosafety, Hazardous Substances, wastes, and Persistent Organic Pollutants, Genetically Modified Organisms, Liability Issues in Trans boundary Environmental Harm, International Governance for Sustainable Development, International Environmental Law and Compliance, Climate change, Marine Pollution, Nuclear Radiations and Oil Spills. More than 100 papers are expected to be presented during the two day conference. The conference would conclude with the Valedictory function on March 16 which would be addressed by Hon’ble Justice Rajiv Bhalla, Judge Punjab and Haryana High Court and Mr. G.K Chatrath as the guest of honour, Professor Sangita Bhalla, Director, UILS informed.
