Chandigarh, April 20, 2025: In a moment of great pride for PGIMER, Chandigarh, Prof. Pinaki Dutta, a distinguished faculty member of the Department of Endocrinology, has been conferred with the Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award 2023 by the Odisha Bigyan Academy, Government of Odisha. This prestigious award honours eminent Odia scientists working outside the state for their outstanding contributions to science and technology.
Hailing from Odisha, Prof. Dutta completed his MBBS from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur (under Berhampur University) in 1997. He went on to pursue his MD in Internal Medicine (2000) and DM in Endocrinology (2003) from PGIMER, Chandigarh. A meritorious student, he was conferred the Best Graduate Award and earned distinctions in five subjects during his medical training.
Prof. Dutta began his academic journey at PGIMER in 2004 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015 and to Additional Professor in 2018. Over the course of more than 24 years, he has made seminal contributions to the field of endocrinology, with a special focus on pituitary disorders. His groundbreaking research has revolutionized the management of pituitary tumours, transitioning from conventional clinical practices to personalized medicine and advanced multi-omics approaches.
One of his landmark contributions is the cost-effective use of Imatinib in acromegaly treatment, offering a promising alternative to expensive somatostatin analogues. With over 250 research publications in reputed national and international journals, 20 conference proceedings, 12 book chapters, and successful mentorship of 50 MD/DM and 4 Ph.D. students, Prof. Dutta has built a formidable legacy of scientific excellence and mentorship.
His academic accomplishments have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Best Paper Award at RSSDI (2003), Young Investigator Award (2005, San Diego, USA, by the Pituitary Society), and the DST-UK Thematic Partnership Grant (2014). He has also delivered prestigious orations, including the Subash Mukherjee Memorial Oration (Endocrine Society of India) and the ICMR M.N. Sen Memorial Oration (2020).
Prof. Dutta has represented India on various global platforms and served as a Visiting Professor at renowned institutions such as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (USA), Barts and The London School of Medicine (UK), and Semmelweis University (Budapest, Europe). He is actively involved with the Pituitary Society, where he holds a key leadership position—becoming the first Indian to do so at the international level.
