The countdown to celebration of 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) has begun at PGIMER. The institute is enthusiastic and geared up to celebrate “Yoga for One Earth, One Health” theme on International Day of Yoga. Director, Dean, Medical Superintendent, Deputy Director, Financial Advisor, faculty, students, staff and their families are expected to perform Common Yoga Protocol at Sports complex, PGIMER, Chandigarh. A committee headed by Dr Vipin Kaushal has been constituted to see the arrangements.

On this occasion Director PGIMER, Prof Vivek Lal , said “I appeal health care workers of tricity to join PGI’s Yoga Day celebration on June 21st as it brings team spirit necessary for quality delivery of clinical services”.

Prof. Vipin Kaushal, Medical Superintendent PGIMER added, “All the arrangements are in place, in case of rain, the event will be shifted to Zakir Hall”. Dr Akshay Anand, Professor Incharge of the Yoga Centre said that “Yoga is an evidence-based tool for holistic healthcare and important for work-life balance which is why, Y-break has been implemented in over 19 departments.

This event is being organized by PGIMER’s Yoga centre, ‘CCRYN-Collaborative Centre for Mind Body Intervention through Yoga’. Over 3,000 participants have registered for the 11th International Day of Yoga celebration on June 21, 2025 in which yoga mats, T-shirts, and refreshments will be provided to all participants.

It seems that this year healthcare workers at PGIMER will break their own record of highest number of healthcare workers practicing Common Yoga Protocol on IDY. Last year, PGIMER set a record with the participation of 1,924 healthcare workers in a yoga event, which was officially recognized by the Asia Book of Records. PGIMER Yoga centre has been conducting a 45-minute Yoga sessions for patient’s caregivers, daily, since 1st June 2025 as a pre-celebration. However, Yoga for caregivers is a routine activity which is conducted twice a week in the park behind Bhargava Auditorium at PGIMER. Additionally, a Yoga Summer Camp for children is currently being held at the PGI Community Centre, which began on 1st June 2025.

Yoga offers numerous benefits for both mental and physical health. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, supports the management of hypertension and diabetes, alleviates chronic back pain, and improves posture, among other advantages. PGIMER has actively taken steps to integrate yoga into holistic healthcare and research, recognizing its vital role in promoting overall well-being.

Several studies are currently underway exploring the benefits of yoga and its integration into patient care, with the goal of enhancing treatment outcomes and supporting comprehensive rehabilitation. This includes 6 MD/DM thesis, 10 PhD thesis and more than 7 extramural grants. PGIMER also aims to execute research in the field of Yoga to generate evidence-based yoga protocols and to determine the mechanism behind the effect of Yoga on body’s physiology.

Through its dedicated Yoga Centre, PGIMER aims to offer a well-equipped facility for practicing yoga under the guidance of experienced trainers. This service is available to healthcare workers, staff, faculty, and patients alike.
