CHANDIGARH: The 5th Indian Traditional Sports and Games Association festival concluded with resounding success at the Panjab University campus, serving as a vibrant celebration of India’s rich heritage of indigenous sports and cultural practices.

The festival featured 17 distinct traditional and indigenous sports and games, uniquely aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The event drew a massive gathering of approximately 1,500 athletes, sports enthusiasts, and dignitaries from across the country, all united to showcase and preserve centuries-old games that form the core of India’s cultural identity. Furthermore, organizers reported the event achieved a digital reach of over one million people across various social media platforms.

A Celebration of Heritage and Athleticism The festival commenced with a vibrant cultural procession featuring folk music and dance performances, setting a festive tone for the days ahead. Participants enthusiastically engaged in a wide array of traditional sports, including Aainball, Aerobics, Atya Patya, Gatka, Gilli Danda, Gittian, Kanche, Kho Kho, Langri, Lathi, Lattu, Mallkambh, Mallyudha, Pachisi, Pittu, Rope Skipping, and Yoga.

The closing ceremony was a star-studded affair, with Dr. Anmol Ratan Siddhu, Former Advocate General of Punjab and current President of the Chandigarh Olympic Association, presiding as the Chief Guest.

The event saw attendance from numerous distinguished guests, including Dr. Tomeer Sharma, Mr. Sunil (Pradesh Sangthan Mantri, Kreeda Bharti), Advocate Arpita Malik (National Convenor, Khelo Bharat), Adv. Rajeev Sharma (Chandigarh Rowing Association), Mr. P.S. Lamba (State Convenor, BJP Sports Cell), and Mr. Ravinder Kumar (Secretary General, National Martial Arts Committee).

Key figures in the traditional sports movement were also prominently featured, such as Madam Soni Bharat (Secretary General, Traditional Sports and Games Federation-India), Mr. K. Bharat (President, Asian Traditional Sports and Games Association), and Mr. Neeraj Kumar Mehra (Founder and President, National Council of Sports Sciences and Physical Education). Academic leaders, including Prof. (Dr.) Neeru Malik and Dr. Rakesh Malik, were also present to lend their support.

Looking to the Future During the concluding ceremonies, outstanding athletes and teams were honored for their skill, sportsmanship, and dedication to preserving traditional sports. The event successfully provided a platform for intergenerational exchange, ensuring that these historical sports continue to thrive in the modern era.

Looking ahead, the organizers announced ambitious plans to expand the association’s reach by collaborating with schools and universities nationwide. By blending athletic competition with cultural education, the 5th Indian Traditional Sports and Games Association meet successfully reaffirmed its mission to keep India’s timeless games alive for future generations.
