CHANDIGARH: Mohit Verma, an Assistant Professor at the Post Graduate Government College for Girls (PGGCG), Sector 42, Chandigarh, successfully represented India at the prestigious Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS) International Conference 2026. Hosted by Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan, from June 16–20, 2026, the elite academic summit brought together more than 300 scholars, researchers, policymakers, and experts from 39 countries to deliberate on contemporary issues shaping the future of Central Eurasia.

Unpacking China’s ‘Sticky Power’

During the conference, Verma presented his original research paper titled “From Soft Power to Sticky Power: China’s Classroom-to-Cinema Strategy in Central Asia,” which generated significant interest among international delegates for its innovative geopolitical analysis.

The study introduces a fresh perspective on how modern regional influence operates:

  • The Concept: It details a “Classroom-to-Cinema Strategy,” arguing that Chinese influence increasingly relies on educational institutions, cultural networks, media narratives, and digital platforms rather than traditional instruments of power.

  • Mechanisms of Influence: Addressing a global audience, Verma highlighted how Mandarin language programmes, media content, and cultural centers like Confucius Institutes build long-term societal embeddedness.

  • Geopolitical Impact: The research outlines how these subtle, non-traditional linkages ultimately alter regional security perceptions and reshape the geopolitical landscape of Central Eurasia.

Verma’s presentation was followed by extensive interactions and insightful discussions with scholars spanning Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East.

Cultural Diplomacy and Embassy Engagements

Beyond the conference, the visit included vital diplomatic and academic exchanges. Verma joined an Indian delegation headed by Prof. Jagmeet Bawa from the Department of South and Central Asian Studies, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, to visit the Indian Cultural Centre at the Embassy of India.

The delegation was warmly received by Smt. Nalini Singhal, Director of the Vivekananda Cultural Centre, and Shri Arvind Shukla, Head of Chancery & Education. Their dialogue centered on India’s growing soft power, educational outreach, and people-to-people engagement across Central Asia, providing valuable academic insights for Verma’s ongoing research.

International Day of Yoga Celebrations

Adding a unique dimension to the academic trip, Verma participated in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations held on June 20, 2026, at Caspian University, Almaty. Organised under the aegis of the Embassy of India in Kazakhstan, the event saw enthusiastic participation from diverse nationalities, showcasing the practice as a universal bridge between cultures.

During the event, Verma had the privilege of meeting Shri Y. K. Sailas Thangal, the Ambassador of India to Kazakhstan, alongside senior members of the Indian diplomatic mission. He noted that the gathering served as a powerful testament to India’s enduring contribution to global harmony and well-being through yoga.

Reflecting on the successful visit, Verma stated that the conference provided an exceptional platform for international networking and cultural dialogue, while effectively strengthening scholarly linkages between India and Central Asia. The milestone marks a proud achievement for Chandigarh’s academic community on the global stage.
