Chandigarh, May 29 — The Chandigarh Congress has come out strongly against the BJP-led Municipal Corporation’s proposal to increase the rental rates of community centers across the city, calling it an “anti-people” move that disproportionately affects the poor and middle class.
Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) President H.S. Lucky led the charge in condemning the proposal, which is expected to be tabled at an upcoming municipal meeting. He asserted that such a move would undermine the very purpose of community centers, which were created to provide affordable venues for social, cultural, and religious events.
“Community centers were established with a noble intention — to serve as accessible, budget-friendly spaces for common citizens,” said Lucky. “Increasing their rates is not only insensitive but also unjust, especially when families are already struggling with economic hardships.”
Lucky emphasized that community centers serve as crucial venues for weddings, birthdays, and religious ceremonies, and are often provided free of cost for post-death rituals. He warned that raising charges or eliminating concessions would burden families during both celebratory and grieving times.
The Congress leader also criticized the timing of the proposal, citing a backdrop of rising inflation, high unemployment, and a recent hike in property taxes. “The administration should be easing the public’s burden, not adding to it,” he said.
The Chandigarh Congress has called upon all elected representatives, civic bodies, and social organizations to unite in opposition to the proposed hike. Lucky warned that if the Municipal Corporation moves forward with the plan, the Congress Party is prepared to launch a public agitation.
“This is not just a policy issue; it’s about basic human sensitivity and social justice,” Lucky concluded.
