CHANDIGARH: The five District Congress Committees of Chandigarh staged a strong protest at Matka Chowk on Tuesday against the Election Commission of India and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
A large number of Congress leaders and party workers participated in the demonstration. Carrying banners and placards, the protesters raised slogans against the Election Commission, demanding that the strict impartiality of democratic institutions be maintained.
Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CTCC) President H.S. Lucky led the protest, accompanied by the five District Congress Presidents: Rajdeep Sidhu, Surjit Dhillon, Vipin Jyot Aman, Daljit Singh, and Jasbir Bunty.
Addressing the gathered protesters, CTCC President H.S. Lucky stated that the Election Commission is one of the most vital constitutional institutions of the country’s democracy, and its impartiality and credibility must be fiercely protected at all costs.
He highlighted that the Congress party has raised serious questions regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and its recent decisions.
“The party’s democratic movement will continue unabated until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns from his post,” Lucky declared to the crowd.
Lucky alleged that lingering questions regarding the functioning of the Election Commission have successfully created a crisis of public confidence among the electorate. He emphasized that an independent and impartial Election Commission is absolutely essential for strengthening India’s democracy.
He argued that if doubts arise about the neutrality of constitutional institutions, it becomes a grave matter of concern for the democratic system. It is the core responsibility of the Election Commission to function with complete transparency, free from any political pressure or discrimination, ensuring that citizens maintain unwavering faith in the electoral process.
The Congress President further warned that if doubts regarding the independence and impartiality of constitutional institutions continue to grow among the public, it could pose a severe, long-term challenge to the nation’s democracy. He reaffirmed that the Congress party will actively continue to raise its voice for the protection of democratic values and institutions.
The protest at Matka Chowk saw active participation from senior Congress leaders, district office-bearers, block presidents, local councillors, and a large contingent of party workers, all demanding that the Election Commission ensure complete fairness and transparency in its operations.
