CHANDIGARH, April 20, 2026 — The District Level Advisory and Monitoring Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh convened its 3rd Review Meeting today under the chairmanship of Chandigarh Member of Parliament (MP) Manish Tewari. The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of Central Government schemes and addressed pressing civic issues affecting city residents.
The high-level meeting was attended by key dignitaries, including Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav, Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar, Housing Board CEO Pradeep Kumar, former Mayor Kamlesh, and B.M. Khanna, alongside other senior officials from the administration and Municipal Corporation.
Key Directives and Discussions:
-
City-Wide Water Audit: Addressing repeated public complaints and media reports regarding drinking water contamination—ostensibly caused by sewage seepage from cracked pipes—MP Tewari directed the Municipal Corporation to immediately initiate a comprehensive water audit. The audit will prioritize relief and rehabilitation colonies and is mandated to be completed within the next 45 days.
-
CHB Need-Based Changes: Tewari urged officials to adopt a more “humane view” regarding need-based structural changes in Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) dwelling units. He instructed officials to present a comparative chart detailing the evolution of relaxations from 2014 to 2026, clarifying the current benefits available to residents.
-
Overhaul of Vending Zones: A consensus was reached among committee members that the current street vending zones lack economic efficiency and financial viability. The administration has been instructed to conduct a thorough review to allot new, viable vending sites while closing down unviable ones.
-
Solar Power Billing Discrepancies: MP Tewari advised the Chief Engineer, whose department interfaces with Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL), to prioritize resolving the issue of inflated electricity bills. Specifically, he highlighted problems where power generated by residential solar panels is not being accurately offset against the power consumed.
-
Central Schemes Implementation: Mayor Saurabh Joshi made incisive interventions regarding the effective execution of major Central schemes within the city, specifically highlighting the Swachh Bharat Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and AMRUT 1 and 2.
