Chandigarh, 27 February 2025 : Panjab University’s 72nd convocation will witness a significant change in the formal attire of students and officials with the introduction of a sleeveless ‘band gala’ button-down jacket made from handloom-blended fabric. Featuring traditional “Baag Phulkari” embroidery on the placket and neckline, the jacket will serve as the official outer garment for the event and will be available for rent.
To maintain uniformity, a color-coded system has been introduced:
- Saffron – Undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Red – Ph.D., D.Sc., and D.Litt awardees
- Green – Deans
- Blue – PU Fellows
- Pink – Honoris Causa recipients
- Beige – Dignitaries
Attendees can opt for either Indian or Western attire. For men, the dress code includes a white formal shirt with beige trousers or a white/off-white/beige kurta-pyjama, with turbans, if worn, in matching shades. Women can choose from a white formal shirt with beige trousers or a white/off-white/beige salwar suit, churidar suit, or sari, with a coordinating dupatta.
The convocation jacket will be available for rent at Rs.120/-, with a refundable security deposit of Rs.1,000/-. Further details and a visual reference can be accessed via a QR code on the university website.
Highlighting the initiative, PU Vice Chancellor Professor Renu Vig stated, “This new attire reflects the university’s commitment to preserving tradition while maintaining academic decorum. The incorporation of Phulkari embroidery, a hallmark of Punjab’s rich cultural heritage, makes the convocation attire both elegant and meaningful, instilling a sense of pride among students and faculty alike.”
The design has been developed by Dr. Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson of the University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, along with her team, under the supervision of a committee led by Professor Yojna Rawat, Director of the Research and Development Cell, Panjab University.
